Not sure Hakstol's blueline has room for both Gudas and Schenn in the top 6.
Also doubt Gudas would clear waivers going down to the Phantoms, so I wonder if it's him and Schenn at 6/7 until an injury occurs.

I hope Ghost and Morin play a full year in the AHL as a pair.
I wish I knew what to expect out of Medvedev.

e Czech defenseman said he got along well with his new teammates after coming from Tampa and is champing at the bit to get out on the ice with them in earnest.

Yeah I thought the same thing. I thought the arrival of Gudas meant the end for Schenn. Now I have no idea how he gets ice time barring an injury. Then you have to figure in if the prospects get a shot.

Hey, defensive depth is never a bad thing.

I think that you're right. It will be a battle between Schenn and Gudas for that #6 spot. It's still, very much, a less than stellar defense corps, though.

On the bright side, the Phantoms should have a real solid top 7/8. It'll be interesting to see who is left out of that group:

Ghost, Morin, Manning, Drewiske, Hagg, Alt, Marti/Pettersson

I still think a trade is forthcoming....possibly during camp.

There's no rush as the team is under the cap, but it's not as if injuries aren't a thing and the Flyers are in a position to deal a veteran defenseman if they had to.

Let's see how good of a camp Gudas has. He is after all almost 3M cheaper than Luke. Don't know if Luke brings 3M more in value.. I guess we will find out

Agreed -- either way, the Flyers are in a good position. Yeah, some of them have obvious limitations, but you'd still rather have too many than not enough

Hard to see them pairing MDZ and Streit together. I see:
Streit - Schultz
Del Zotto - MacDonald
*Medvedev - Gudas/Schenn

*I see Medvedev getting 3rd line minutes until they see what he really brings to the table. Definitely an unknown, at this point.

just my opinion. I don't think he is good enough in the defensive zone. I think he will struggle big time. hope I am wrong. not all of them are going to pan out.

I think a lot of people dismissed Gudas, but looking at the numbers, he was a pretty solid contributor to a 100+ point Lightning team in 2013-14 and didn't play poorly last season before the injuries.

Biggest concern with him is disciplined play. He likes to hit. A lot. That's not bad, but it can also leads to positioning issues and blown coverages. The other concern is Gudas takes a lot of obstruction penalties.

Despite those rough edges, Gudas should be able to be a cheap, effective player for the Flyers.

Medvedev is a bit of an unknown, could end up being their best defenseman. The skill is there, just remains to be seen how he adjusts to the smaller ice and North American game/lifetsyle, etc.

I think this a big question going into the year to decide about their chances for the POs. He may not make or break but the D as a whole certainly could and as you say he could play top minutes or be a 7th.

I was disappointed that NHL's 30 in 30 didn't even mention him.

From what I've seen he's a bit better in terms of recovery, but not as fast on a straight line. When Schenn gets moving he can actually get some speed up. However, that's all pre-injury on Gudas, and it's admittedly on a small viewing size.

He very well could, because he's making about $2.5mm less.
